George R. Dixon
Mr. Dixon is involved in every element of community activities. He is constantly assisting seniors and other members of the community with their various problems.
Mr. Dixon was an Executive Board Member of the East Elmhurst/Corona Civic Association, where he worked closely with block associations and other community organizations. He is on the board of the NAACP Corona/East Elmhurst Chapter and also Freedom Fund Chairperson, 2nd Vice President and a Diamond Life Member.
George served in Viet Nam with the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged after eight years of service. He is presently a life member of VFW Frederick Williams Post #2888. George is also a member and Past Master Of Trinity Lodge No. 51 F&AM of the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of The State of New York; a member at large of the Friends of East Elmhurst Library; past member of Community Board #3, and served on the Airport and Communication Committees and a member of the Library Action Committee of Langston Hughes Community Library & Cultural Center, where he assists in promoting free cultural programs for the community.
As District Leader and member of the Frederick Douglass Democratic Association, he acts as liaison between other elected officials. He regularly informs his members of the various issues and challenges confronting the community and acts upon them immediately.
As twice Distinguished Past President of the Kiwanis Club of Corona East Elmhurst, he was instrumental in organizing many of the services which were provided at the local shelters. His company provides funding to local youth activities, such as the All American Soap Box Derby for their annual events; Christmas parties for children, and various other events and projects.
Many have said that Mr. Dixon is truly a leader of leaders. He is a person who will always get the job done.
George created the “George R. Dixon Scholarship” and donates various amounts to organizations towards their scholarships.
Mr. Dixon has received numerous awards, citations and proclamations from political leaders and organizations for his community services. Some of them are: Community Service Awards from Elmcor Youth & Adult Activities, Key Women of America, Inc., Concourse Village Branch; Business Awards from East Elmhurst-Corona Civic Association, NAACP; Outstanding Service Award from the 115th Precinct Council and the Father Billini Award for service to the youth of the community; citations and proclamations from Past Queens Borough President Claire Shulman, and Borough President Helen Marshall, Councilwoman Helen Sears and several other political leaders. He has appeared in Newsday Queens Life Profile and was featured as a “Everyday Hero” with his wife Gloria, also by Newsday. In 2011, George and his wife were featured in a New York Times article about long time Queens residents and their love for New York.
George is a member and sits on the Vestry of The Church of The Resurrection. In 2014, he received the “Man of the Year” Award for his service to his church and the community.
George R. Dixon is the owner of a visual arts production company, Minds of Production. He donates printing services to various community groups. Mr. Dixon is also a curator of African & African American Art. His extensive travels, with his wife Gloria, have given him the opportunity to photograph and video exotic locations and various cultures, and to acquire numerous artifacts that have been shown and displayed in several galleries, libraries and schools.
George R. Dixon believes that we should always help our children to help themselves, and that everyone should be able to share in the American Dream.
